You guys are a lot better there. So Jeff thank you for being here. I think for us and the way that we think about the networking space generally and about Cisco specifically, security is a very important part of that thought process and how we think about the opportunity and a lot of time people talk about well, security is a very small part of Cisco, but for me it's kind of growing but it's also on a key kind of a typical spirit if you will as we go forward.

So we have thought and I have thought a lot about how I think that security, the approach IT security is changing, should be changing in order to drive better efficiency and return and frankly just better results from security overall, but looking back how the strategy of security business evolved and how do you see the business changing in the foreseeable future?

I'll maybe pontificate a little but here, go back where we were say five years ago in security, which - what really is security player that way. There are classic layer, three level firewall, have a really good email security product, that was kind of it. So you're right that time though we saw the landscape was fundamentally changing and we made kind of our initial first couple kind of strategic bet and bet number one was network.

The one thing that was common about the threat is they travel through network. So there could do a better job of those usually network to deliver better security architecture, moving around segmentation, that's a huge piece of what we're doing in the networking side and I was actually in networking for the first seven years at Cisco. So that was kind of like the network visibility. So the vapor from the network is a great analytics data source for us to find the types of threat.

That was kind of bet one. The second bet there was really the investment in world class for that capability. We didn't really have that at Cisco before. We acquired Sourcefire is kind of like the any one of the new Cisco security world. So that really brought with it the house of that research team. So we have a - large research team is kind of private enterprise in the world. Fantastic quadrant leading IPS functionality, world class base events, file announce technology.

So that really kind of started our process and frankly those two pillars remain just as relevant today as they were five years ago and then a couple things have changed I would say kind of a long relay and kind of the one of the two changes was we think of the cloud, you kind of fundamentally applications and data are and frankly where users are accessing is changing. That huge and where we need to put security controls into the environment and you've seen that with our acquisition and frankly even again leverage the network because traffic swing across the networks and helping you leverage the network as those traffic patterns change

Microsoft has changed the way it approaches design. The new Office icons unveiled this week are the first glimpse at a far bigger design overhaul that’s going on inside the company. Zune, Media Center, Windows Phone, and Windows 8 all contained the design principles that eventually became the Metro design language in 2003. It was a strategic approach to design, all about content and typography. While it mostly worked well on phones, Metro landed on PC in the form of Windows 8. It was a rush toward touchscreen computing that went a little too far for most PC users, and Microsoft stepped back from its Metro design language in a big way with Windows 10 and the death of Windows Phone.

A NEW OPEN-SOURCE APPROACH TO DESIGN
Over the past year, Microsoft introduced Fluent Design. Unlike Metro, Fluent includes more subtle design changes with a focus on animations and blur effects. While it originally debuted in Windows 10, we’re starting to see more of its principles appear in Office and Microsoft’s web services. Microsoft was quick to note at its launch that Fluent would be a “journey” and not the type of Windows 8 Metro rush we saw. That’s been true over the past year, as Windows 10 design has evolved slowly with touches of Fluent.


Design has always been a core part of certain Microsoft products, but it hasn’t always felt like there’s been total coherence across the company. “Design always wanted to work together and do this kind of stuff,” Friedman says. “What you’re seeing is the entire company following suit, and design being able to use that gear in a really nice way ... and you’ll see it happening across Windows, Office, and Surface more and more over time.”

Microsoft is taking a careful approach with Fluent Design, instead of trying to cram it into everything at the same time. Friedman has been at the center of Microsoft’s more ambitious product bets, including the SPOT watches from 2004, ultra mobile PCs, the KIN phone, and the unreleased Courier device. Those failures appear to have certainly taught Microsoft some valuable lessons to avoid, and the new Office icons are a good example of that.



“If we have to change everything at the same time, it will never happen,” explains Friedman. “We’re highly coordinated internally, so the Office designers know exactly what’s coming next with Windows. The Windows designers know exactly what’s coming next with Office.”

Microsoft no longer has a mobile hardware or software platform after the death of Windows Phone, so that makes it difficult to influence other mobile platforms like it did with Metro. However, it has found some success with apps like Outlook for mobile. It’s now used by more than 100 million people, and it has high ratings in the App Store. The Verge has named it the best email app for iOS. It’s getting a design overhaul today as part of Microsoft’s renewed focus on design and the way subtle animations and features can make you appreciate using an app.

Outlook Mobile is a good example of the sort of attention to detail that Microsoft has lacked in some areas over the years, and for Windows users, it will be encouraging to hear that Microsoft’s best designers are now working very closely together on the future of software and hardware at the company.

One of the more visible pieces of Cisco’s progress on supporting a modern multicloud world is from the DevNet community. Over the last five years, the team run by Cisco Senior Vice President Susie Wee, who’s chief technology officer of the DevNet group, has built a developer platform that now counts more than 560,000 registered members. For comparison, in 2017 there were 45,000 CCIEs globally. The DevNet team has also been a driving force internally to ensure that all Cisco products are programmable and have APIs.

At the conference, the DevNet Zone, where SiliconANGLE’s livestreaming studio theCUBE was located, was full of both classrooms and labs that were bustling with activity. In talking to users and partners, one of the outstanding online resources is the Sandbox, which provides an always-on place to develop, code and play with a variety of software and infrastructure solutions. The DevNet group is the best example that we have seen in the industry of a traditional information technology company building a successful developer practice with a thriving community from grassroots efforts.

Now 10 years into the wave of cloud computing, we have seen many players go through iterations and failures in cloud strategies. Strong enterprise tech players such as Cisco, VMware Inc. and Red Hat Inc. now position themselves to be help users in multicloud deployments. For Cisco, this means partnering with cloud providers – Amazon Web Services Inc., Microsoft Corp.’ Azure, Google Cloud and service providers – and software and solutions that span between on-premises and cloud offerings.

Cisco released a major update to its cloud management software from the CliQr acquisition, now known as Cloud Center Suite. Now microservices-based and a Kubernetes service itself, the software can now manage and orchestrate containers, not just virtual machines. As discussed by Cisco’s Dave Cope, you allow “CloudCenter, once you define your application, to understand the resources on each of these environments and lay down that application natively on those different environments.”

Cloud Center Suite is only one piece of a broad multicloud portfolio developed from acquisitions, including Viptela (now Cisco’s leading SD-WAN offering), AppDynamics (application performance monitoring and management) and Cisco Stealthwatch Cloud (security solution from Lancope). Wendy Mars, Cisco’s president of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said on theCUBE that European customers have gotten beyond hesitancy of embracing cloud. Now, users determine, based on business, application requirements, governance and security, the right places for workloads and resources.

Although the leaders in public cloud are clearly defined, there are numerous challenges and opportunities in multicloud. Cisco’s strategy is help bridge its products and customers from its dominant networking and data center position into a world where Cisco isn’t the center of data, but does have strong relevance. The role of networking and hardware will not disappear, but it’s smart of Cisco to help be a leader in training and building the next generation of workers and tools
